Did you know...

On Labor Day — the first Monday in September — we celebrate the contributions that 155 million workers are making to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

The first observance of Labor Day is believed to have been a parade of 10,000 workers on September 5, 1882, in New York City.

Congress passed a bill to establish Labor Day as a federal holiday in 1894. President Grover Cleveland signed the bill soon after.

Labor Day is seen as the last long weekend of summer; then, it is back to school for 56 million students attending the nation’s elementary through high schools (grades K-12) this fall.
